Getting care

What to expect at your first psychiatric evaluation

A first visit with a psychiatrist can feel intimidating, especially if you're not sure what you'll be asked. Here's what usually happens and how to get the most out of it.

How long it takes

A thorough evaluation usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. In my practice I schedule the full time, so we're not rushing.

What we'll talk about

  • What brings you in. What's been happening, when it started, and how it affects your days.
  • Your history. Past episodes, treatments you've tried, and what did or didn't help.
  • Medical history. Conditions, medications, supplements, surgeries, and allergies.
  • Sleep, energy, appetite, and concentration.
  • Substance use. Alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, and other substances, asked without judgment because it changes the plan.
  • Family history. Mental health conditions in blood relatives can point toward certain diagnoses or medications.
  • Your life. Work, relationships, stressors, and what you want to be different.
  • Safety. I'll ask everyone about thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It's a routine, important question.

I may also ask you to fill out short questionnaires for depression, anxiety, or ADHD before the visit. They help us measure progress over time.

What you leave with

By the end, we'll talk through a working diagnosis in plain language and the treatment options, with the pros and cons of each. If medication makes sense, we'll decide together whether to start. You'll also get a written plan within a couple of days.

How to prepare

  • A list of medications and doses, including supplements
  • Names of past psychiatric medications, if you remember them
  • Recent lab results, if you have them
  • Two or three things you most want help with

It's normal to feel nervous. You don't need to have the right words. Part of my job is helping you find them.
